Identity Management 101
What is Identity Management?
NOT IMAGE CONSULTING!
Upon meeting someone socially, if we tell them that we work in Identity Management, they often think that we are some kind of image consultants. Other people think that we help prevent Identity Theft for consumers or for our clients' customers. While that is closer, it is still not Identity Management.
So what is Identity Management---really?
Identity Management (IDM), sometimes referred to as Identity and Access Management (IDA), is about helping organizations manage accounts needed to access their computer systems.
In short, IDM is about giving the good guys access to your system, revoking access from people like ex-employees, in a cost effective manner, while complying with the organization's IT security policies (some of which may be driven by regulations).
There are many components to identity management including provisioning, deprovisioning, synchronization, self-service profile management, selft-service group management, self-service password management, and certificiate and smart card management. These components are important in today's business world, especially when it comes to compliance, saving money, improving security, and enabing for the
cloud.
Ensynch was once told by a client that identity management is the only compliance effort that pays you back. We agree.
